Let us warn you beforehand, if you are with AT&T for your wireless phone services, you are going to move away from them after reading this post. If you are paying more than $45 for unlimited minutes, unlimited text/sms messages, and unlimited data (3G internet) then your can save money. Unlimited everything for $45 plan

A wireless carrier StraightTalk (not really a carrier but an MVNO) is offering unlimited everything plan for just $45 per month. The good news is that they run off of AT&T and T-Mobile network. That is, you get the same service and same coverage as AT&T and T-Mobile. It is a no-brainer that you should jump to Straight-talk and ditch AT&T or T-Mobile as they are charging you too much for their services, when the same services are available for cheap. Moreover, you do not have to give up your phone. You can bring your current phone to Straighttalk.

Bring your own device (BYOD): Keep your phone with you. You just take the AT&T simcard out and put Straighttalk simcard in. No need to buy a new phone or even give up your current phone.

Does it make sense mathematically to switch?

First thing is to do the math before you port your number. AT&T will charge you an ETF (early termination fee) if you port your number to some other carrier while you are in the contract with AT&T. Usually an AT&T contract is two years long and you need to pay $325 – $10 for each month you have been with AT&T.

Just to dispel the notion that we have any particular affinity towards Straight Talk, the following calculation applies equally to other MVNOs (such as PlatinumTel) as well

Let us say you are paying $90 for unlimited anytime minutes and text with limited data. If you move to Straight talk you will save $90 – $45 = $45 per month.

Case 1: Assume that you have been with AT&T for 12 months.

ETF = $325 – (12 X $10) = $325 – $120 = $205.

In order to make up for the ETF you need to be on the Straight Talk network for about 4 and a half month. As you can see this is a good time to move out of AT&T as you will pay more overall staying with AT&T for 12 more months.

Verdict: Switch over to Straight Talk.

Case 2: Assume that you have been with AT&T for 20 months.

ETF: $325 – (20 X $10) = $325 – $200 = $125.

If you stay with AT&T for 4 more months of your contract, you will pay them $90 x 4 = $360 more. If you port over to Straight Talk then you will pay $125 for ETF and $45 X 4 = $180 for service. That is, you will pay a total of $305 – a saving of $60.

Verdict: Switch over to Straight Talk.

Case 3: Assume that you have been with AT&T for more than 22 months.

ETF: $325 – (22 X $10) = $325 – $220 = $105

Staying for the rest of the months with AT&T, you will end up paying a maximum of $90 X 2 = $180. Going with Straight Talk, you will be paying $105 for ETF and $45 X 2 = $90 for service. That is, you will need to pay a total of $195. You will lose $5, so just stay with AT&T for two more months and then switch.

Verdict: Stay with AT&T if you have no more than 2 months left for your contract to get over.

Follow these steps if you want to switch

1. Make sure your phone is either an AT&T or T-Mobile phone or an unlocked GSM phone.

2. Purchase the simcard from Straighttalk based on your device – they have both micro sim cards for phones such as iPhone and newer Android models, and normal simcards for other phones.

3. Update your simcard and refill with your favorite amount. There are no contracts with Straight Talk. You can stop their services after a month if you want and there will be no ETF.
